More than 100 years ago, an idea gave birth to the Nature Theatre. The opening in the middle of nature was celebrated with the Goethe festival play “Hermann and Dorothea”. After the great success, there were performances in the open air every year during the summer months, until 1945. Some very successful plays were “Henry the Fowler, King of the Germans”, the “Hans Sachs Plays” and “Poet and Peasant”.

After the Second World War, the last performance took place in 1952 before the Nature Theatre was left to decay. The Chursächsische Veranstaltungsgesellschaft and the town of Bad Elster revived the Nature Theatre in 2006 with numerous supporters. Carl Maria von Weber's romantic opera “Der Freischütz” was chosen for the festive reopening.
After the extensive modernisation in 2018, the theatre in the historic Forest Park became an open-air arena with a movable roof and a larger area for more spectators.
