Mineral healing water
The Sächsische Staatsbäder GmbH has 10 state-recognized healing springs in Bad Elster. These include the Marien and Moritz springs, the salt spring and the Elstersäuerling.
Benefit from the numerous minerals and trace elements that are contained in our healing springs in dissolved form and can therefore be absorbed particularly well by the body. The characteristic combination of minerals and the naturally occurring carbonic acid, which is unique to each healing spring, determine the effect on the organism.

Interesting facts about the creation of healing water
Natural healing water is created by the slow percolation of rainwater through different geological rock layers. It is cleaned, filtered and enriched with minerals and trace elements. In this enriched deep water, carbonic acid is released by solidified magma from past volcanic activity.
The following table gives you an overview of the most important ingredients of the Bad Elster springs and their positive effects on the body:
carbonic acid
- Promotes blood circulation to the skin and other organs, thus ensuring a better oxygen supply to the body
- Stimulates stomach and intestinal function and thus promotes digestion
- Increases the production of gastric juices
- Has a blood pressure regulating effect
Magnesium
- Promotes relaxation and thus helps reduce stress
- Prevents muscle cramps
- Relieves headaches
- Supports cardiovascular functions
Manganese
- Important for insulin production
- Involved in the formation of bones and cartilage
- Supports cell protection, metabolism and energy supply
bicarbonate
- Has an acid-neutralizing effect and therefore helps with heartburn
- Anti-inflammatory in combination with magnesium and calcium
- Increases uric acid excretion and thus prevents gout and kidney stones
Calcium
- Strengthens bones and teeth
- Prevents osteoporosis
- Involved in the conduction of muscle impulses and in blood coagulation
- Regulates cardiac activity
- Helps with chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract
sulfate
- Supports the digestive system, gently stimulates the intestines and naturally eliminates constipation
- Detoxifies the liver and stimulates bile
- Recommended for the treatment of urinary tract infections
Iron
- Is essential for the construction of red blood cells (hemoglobin), for the transport of oxygen and thus for the entire energy metabolism and the immune system
- Increases performance and general well-being
Sodium
- Regulates the water and acid-base balance
- Has a blood pressure regulating effect
- Involved in the excitation of nerve cells
Fluoride
- Strengthens bones and tooth enamel
- Prevents tooth decay
Application of mineral healing water
Due to their chemical composition and physical properties, Bad Elster's healing springs are suitable for drinking and bathing therapy. When using the medicinal water for bathing and drinking, strict regulations under the Medicines Act must be adhered to. Among other things, medicinal waters must contain dissolved substances in a concentration of at least 1.000 mg per 1 kg of water. The healing water in Bad Elster, for example, contains a lot of natural carbon dioxide (more than 2.000 mg/l).
Bath therapy
Even in ancient Rome, bathing was not only cultivated for reasons of body care, recreation or relaxation, but was also said to have healing effects back then. For example, the buoyancy of the water significantly relieves the strain on muscles and joints, thereby alleviating pain. In addition, warm healing water generally promotes relaxation and ensures general well-being. Carbon dioxide baths have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and naturally reduce elevated blood pressure. Mineral baths support metabolism and help with deacidification. The high levels of carbonic acid in the Elsteran mineral springs also make bathing a bubbling experience. Try it!
Drinking cure
During the drinking cure, the healing water is drunk regularly over a longer period of time for therapeutic purposes. This form of treatment was prescribed for numerous illnesses until the 20th century. Drinking regularly, medicinal waters can prevent a mineral deficiency or compensate for an existing deficit. Depending on their mineral composition, St. Mary's, Moritz, salt spring and Elstersäuerling alleviate problems of digestion, metabolism, kidneys and urinary tract, promote recovery and compensate for mineral deficiencies.
